Nurse burnout – a hidden threat to healthcare

The head of the nursing service Anastasia Zorina raised an important problem of Kazakhstani health care – emotional burnout.

   – Up to 65% of nurses in Kazakhstan experience symptoms of psycho-emotional burnout at different stages. The most vulnerable were nurses working in emergency rooms, infectious diseases departments and intensive care. We identified the causes of emotional fatigue – this is a lack of opportunities for career growth, an unfavorable working environment, toxicity of colleagues, depreciation of the work of employees, insufficient recognition of its significance, replacement of personal life with work, work in excess of the norm. In Asian countries, due to the labor mentality and unspoken social rules, employees even die at work: in Japan they are called karosi, in China – Golaos, in Korea – kvaros, we have workaholics. All this leads to the fact that the employee does not do the job effectively, and in medicine it can cost the patient’s life.

The hospital’s research not only exposed the problem, but also prepared recommendations for its solution. And this was traced in all reports, which made the conference more valuable and productive.
