Neurologist’s view: How does depression affect the brain?

Depression is a diagnosable syndrome described in the International Classification of Diseases and, like any disease, needs treatment. In our hospital, neurologists, upon admission, even test patients for depression as a second disease in order to initially adjust therapy:

   – Depression and anxiety create a very large background for many diseases, with it all diseases proceed brighter, – commented neurologist Gulnar Isakanova, – This condition provokes migraines, pain, dystonic disorders, causes sleep and appetite disturbance, fatigue, reduces the quality of life. It can even cause Parkinson’s disease, dementia, as it leads to the death of neurons. That is why it is necessary to treat depression, as well as sleep disturbance. In some countries, people do not have the right to drive if they have insomnia.

At the initial stage, depression is diagnosed by a general practitioner and neurologist, but the decision to issue a sick leave is made by a psychotherapist and psychiatrist.

   – The first signs of depression are considered to be low mood over the past two weeks, decreased thought and motor activity, loss of interest in life, social isolation, thoughts of death. This is what we identify in the tests. It’s time to stop treating depression as just a whim, as it harms people’s health, – said the doctor.

Today, 5 to 20% of people in the world suffer from depression, mainly women, due to their emotionality and increased anxiety about their health.
